Seventeen continues to reinvent the way its 13 members connect musically, beyond the groupâs official vocal, hip-hop, and performance units. In recent years, new duos and sub-units have emerged. On September 29th, S.Coups and Mingyu shine as CxM with the release of their mini-album âHYPE VIBESâ.
With six tracks spanning hip-hop, pop, rock, and EDM, the album not only showcases the chemistry the duo has built over years on stage but also reveals personal sides that might go unnoticed in a 13-member group.

The essence of the album is grounded in a simple principle: live fully in the present.
Mingyu sees life as a series of moments, each with its own soundtrack. âThe music I listen to changes depending on the momentâwhether Iâm working out, feeling down, feeling good, drinking wine, or having a beer. Every moment creates its own vibe, and in that moment, music lets us connect and relate to one another on a deeper level.â

This philosophy also shapes how they approach daily life. Mingyu prefers to show the human side behind his positive image: âI think Iâm someone who really stays in touch with my emotions. Iâve heard that I come across as very positive, but honestly, I just try to stay true to how I feel. I have my ups and downsâthere are days when I feel a bit off or extra sensitive too. But I try not to let it get to me or the people around me, and keep the energy on the brighter side,â he says.

Mingyu recalls the duoâs dedication: âWe worked on so many details and couldnât let go of even a single sound or lyric. We listened to the tracks thousands of times, making countless revisions. Sometimes the main theme came to us spontaneously, and other times it developed as we listened to the trackâit was a mix of different inspirations.â
Among the tracks, some carry special memories. Mingyu draws inspiration from a moment with Green Day in Mexico: âThereâs a song called âYoung againâ among the tracks. When I was watching Green Day perform in Mexico, the vocalist, Billie Joe Armstrong, said something that really stuck with me: âPut down your phones for just one moment and enjoy the stageâthis moment wonât come again.â That left a really strong impression, and thatâs how the first lyrics of the song came about.â
The single â5, 4, 3 (Pretty Woman)â, featuring artist Lay Bankz, interpolates the timeless classic âOh, Pretty Womanâ by Roy Orbison, reimagining its romantic melody with a vibrant disco sound. The track channels magnetic feelings of irresistible attraction with a direct, modern delivery, expanding its reach to a global audience. Beyond the lead single, the album highlights CxMâs versatility with five other tracks: the hip-hop tracks âFiestaâ and âWorth itâ, the pop âFor youâ, the rock-based âYoung again,â and the EDM âEarth.â On all tracks, S.Coups and Mingyu co-wrote and composed the songs, creating a work that reflects their tastes, moods, and creative vision. âA mixture of genres wasnât a big concern for us. I just wanted to capture and share everything I love. Life is full of many different moments, and for each moment, you need different kinds of music to listen to and connect with in your daily life. Thatâs how we naturally incorporated a range of different genres,â explains Mingyu.
Fan relationships also run throughout âHYPE VIBESâ, particularly in âFor youâ. For Mingyu, the track is pure affection: âItâs an uplifting song that expresses the affection and appreciation we feel for our fansâtheyâre adorable and lovable. I really liked the word âhomies,â as it represents the bond between S.Coups and Mingyu, as well as our connection with our fans.â

More than a side project, âHYPE VIBESâ reflects new paths in Seventeenâs career. Mingyu concludes with a promise: âThis is just the beginning! Through this album and the process of creating it, I realized that we can do so much more. I experienced so many different aspects of creating music, and as we worked on everythingâfrom the songs to the visualsâI found myself wanting to try different things and put even more into it. So now, I just want to keep exploring and creating.â
In the end, the message is simple and universal: anyone can join this vibe. (source)
Go behind the scene with CxM during the production of their debut mini album, “HYPE VIBES”.
Seventeen’s S.COUPS and MINGYU, (CxM) spoke with Access Hollywood about their new album, âHYPE VIBESâ.
In this exclusive interview with Billboard Philippines, S.COUPS and MINGYU open up the journey (and decisions) that led to their debut as CxM.

Billboard Philippines: Since the official announcement, the concept of CxM as a sub-unit has excited many fans all around the world. What led to your decision to debut as a duo, and how did you both feel when the idea first came up?
Mingyu: S.COUPS was the one to first suggest it! I think our label also felt weâd make a good duo. Honestly, it just felt right from the start, and overall, itâs been a really positive, enjoyable experience.
BP: Both of you had a major role in writing and producing the tracks on HYPE VIBES. Can you describe the creative process behind the album? Were there any unexpected challenges or moments of inspiration during the making of it?
Mingyu: There were actually a lot of moments when inspiration just hit me out of nowhere. For the lead single, the idea came purely while listening to the song and watching the movie. It just clicked. I was curious about what would happen when a vintage pop song and K-pop came together.
BP: The title of HYPE VIBES suggests an energetic and confident tone. How does the album reflect the kind of energy you want to put out into the world right now?
Mingyu: I hope music is naturally embedded in everyoneâs emotions throughout every moment, and that our album, HYPE VIBES, can be that music that flows through those moments in life.
BP: What do you hope fans take away from HYPE VIBES â not just as music, but as an expression of your journey and your growth as artists?
Mingyu: Rather than hoping that they take away a specific message or meaning from our album, I just hope fans can look back on all the moments we share, see the different layers of who we are, and enjoy the journey with us as it unfolds.
BP: Looking ahead, do you see CxM continuing to grow as a unit? Whatâs next for both of you after HYPE VIBES?
MINGYU: The next chapter⌠hmm, Iâm not sure yet. But since we made this album with the intention to perform, I guess weâll have to take it to the stage, right?
